Analysis of the Causes of Fogging in Medical Goggles

2021-03-16

Medical goggles are eye protection devices designed to protect the eyes from particles, water, chemicals, blood, body fluids, and other infectious materials. Wearing medical goggles is recorded as one of the important measures for the direct prevention of occupational exposure and infections transmitted through blood. Some medical goggles may fog up during use, which can significantly affect the wearer's vision, increase operational difficulty, and raise the risk of contamination. In addition to the accuracy of the wearer's operations, psychological stress is also increasing. Considering the fogging of medical protective goggles, this summarizes the causes of fogging and anti-fog technologies, hoping to be helpful to you.

Medical goggles are eye protection devices designed to protect the eyes, primarily used to prevent particles, water, chemicals, blood, body fluids, and other infectious materials from penetrating the eyes. Wearing medical goggles is recorded as one of the important measures for the direct prevention of occupational exposure and infection from bloodborne pathogens. Some medical protective goggles may fog up during use. This can significantly affect the wearer's vision, increase operational difficulty, and raise the risk of contamination. In addition to the accuracy of the wearer's operations, psychological stress is also increasing. Considering the fogging of medical goggles, this summarizes the causes of fogging in medical protective goggles and anti-fogging technologies, hoping to be helpful to you.

Analysis of the causes of fogging in medical protective goggles

To protect medical goggles, it is often necessary to use N95 or N99 masks with good sealing. However, as the wearing time extends and communication occurs, the sealing of the mask decreases, and some gases leak from the sides of the nose. The performance includes medical protective goggles, fogging of medical protective goggles, decreased visibility, and obstructed vision. Alternatively, if there is a significant temperature difference between the material of the medical goggles and the environment, the temperature will drop, and the saturation vapor pressure of water will fall below the partial pressure of water vapor in the air, causing water vapor to condense into droplets, resulting in fogging of the medical goggles, which will condense on the surface.

Anti-fogging technologies for medical goggles

1. Place adhesive film in a closed mask manner, cut the film into rectangles, and then horizontally stick it to the skin of the mask and the lower eyelid, aligning the mask with the facial skin. This method can reduce the entry of air from the mask into the medical protective goggles, but it will stick directly to the eyelid skin, causing skin damage related to medical adhesives. If allergic to the adhesive, skin damage may worsen.

2. When wearing a mask with paper extracts on top, place a tissue inside the mask. Wear the mask and use an infusion device to stick it at the boundary line between the mask and the lower eyelid skin. This method uses waste paper to absorb a large amount of moisture in the mask, and low-allergenicity paper injectables have low viscosity, causing minimal skin damage and are less likely to cause allergies. The downside is that the injection cannot guarantee the tightness of the mask, allowing some gases to enter the medical protective goggles.

3. Perform anti-fog treatment on the lenses of medical protective goggles by evenly applying anti-fog agent to the inner surface of the lenses and then wearing them until dry. In this method, the moisture-proof agent is mainly designed for spraying, directly spraying the moisture-proof agent onto the inner layer of the lenses, which has a moisture-proof effect after drying, but the water quality contamination on the lens surface appears in a halo shape, reducing clarity and often affecting vision and visibility.

4. Evenly apply iodine tincture to the inner layer of the medical protective goggles and wait until the iodine tincture dries before wearing. The principle is that after iodine is applied to the surface, ionic iodine converts to molecular iodine, oxidizing to form a protective film. On the other hand, iodine solution is recognized as a disinfectant for medical protective goggles, not affecting the lifespan and use of the goggles. This method has a good anti-fog effect on the lenses, and iodine tincture is easily obtainable as a medical disinfectant.
